About Philip Uglow

Philip Uglow Founder The Margin Builders

The Man Behind the Margin

I’ve spent my career in the trenches of operations, from the roofs of industrial complexes to the boardrooms of performance consulting firms. My journey hasn't been a straight line; it has been a series of deep dives into how things are made, how they are sold, and how people can be led to do both better.

From Construction to Successful Exits

From Construction to Successful Exits

My foundation was built managing large-scale construction projects with Provincial Industrial Roofing. That "boots on the ground" experience led me to my first entrepreneurial venture, U-Flow Inc., where I manufactured and sold specialized roofing products. After a successful exit from U-Flow, I founded Custom Plastic Coated Fabrics. We solved a specific, technical friction point: developing a prototype for embossing short runs of plastic-coated fabrics.

These early years taught me that profitability isn't just about a good idea—it’s about the systems that allow that idea to scale. I successfully exited both companies, having learned how to build value from the ground up.

Mastering Performance Management

Mastering Performance Management

I then transitioned into the world of high-stakes consulting with RLG, a performance management firm. There, I worked to drive efficiency in the heavy-hitting worlds of Manufacturing and Oil & Gas. This experience became the catalyst for Renshi Consulting, my own firm dedicated to performance improvement.

The Retail Sabbatical

The Retail "Sabbatical" and the Birth of The Margin Builders

When the world changed during COVID-19, I closed the doors of Renshi and took an unexpected path: management at The Home Depot. Managing at a major retail outlet gave me a front-row seat to the mechanics of large-scale retail sales and the unique leadership challenges that come with high-volume, high-turnover environments.

I left Home Depot with a final, missing piece of the puzzle. I saw that whether you are managing an oil rig, a manufacturing line, or a retail floor, the barriers to growth are the same: a lack of operational and leadership margin.

Why Work With Me?

Mindset, Systems, Data, Culture

Today, I lead The Margin Builders. I work with leaders of companies in that critical "5 to 200 employee" growth phase—those who feel they are working harder but seeing diminishing returns. I offer a methodology forged in construction, manufacturing, and global consulting, built on four pillars:

  • Mindset: High-Altitude Decision Making.
  • Systems: Building processes that don't depend on your constant presence.
  • Data: Using leading indicators to predict your financial future.
  • Culture: Empowering teams to generate the ideas that drive performance.
